About Ahoj
Ahoj is the brand name of an effervescent powder and other effervescent products that have been manufactured in Germany since 1925, symbolized by a sailor dressed in blue. The name derives from the seaman’s call ahoy. The powder is sold in sachets.
After purchasing original manufacturer Frigeo, the brand is owned by German confectionery company Katjes. Ahoj and the blue sailor are among the oldest and best-known German brands.
Well-known flavors are cola, woodruff, raspberry, orange and lemon. In addition to effervescent powder, which can be mixed with water and used as a drink, there are effervescent chunks, PEZ-like effervescent tablets and candies with effervescent powder enclosed.
Ahoj-Brause is marketed as a powdered drink. The preparation instructions on the back of the packaging read as follows: “To make a wonderfully freshly flavored fizzy drink […] with one type of sugar and sweeteners. Fizz the Ahoj effervescent powder in 0.2 liters of cold water (mineral water) and immediately enjoy it to the full.” However, the powder is sometimes also consumed on its own.
A well-known shot is the “Wodka Ahoj”: The effervescent powder is sprinkled in the mouth and then a glass of vodka is poured over it. Shaking the head vigorously mixes the powder and vodka in the oral cavity before swallowing.
